Results of Research

In furtherance of DMTC's mission to act as an "honest broker" for industry, academia and the US Army, DMTC engages in research projects which advance the goals of bringing specialty metals, such as titanium, to the forefront of industry. DMTC will make this research available for download from this website. Please contact us to request a print form of any research indicated below.

PROJECT 2: The Economic Importance of Specialty Metals in America's Metals Heartland 2010

The Economic Importance of Specialty Metals in America's Metals Heartland 2010

One of the first and primary assignments for the Defense Metals Technology Center ("DMTC") was to commission an economic study which would:

  • Geographically define the Metals Industry "Footprint" of the Midwest Region
  • Establish within that area a cataloging of the metal Companies by size and economic parameters and several categories of involvement in "Specialty Metals"
  • Make some specific conclusions of the economic impact this "America's Metals Heartland" carried within the U. S. Economy base.

The just released Summary Publication of the initial results of our study as prepared by Kleinhenz & Associates, economic analysis consultants.

This pamphlet puts forth in a concise format the important economic drivers which define this major U. S. Geographic Industrial Sector—America's Metals Heartland.

PROJECT 1: Armor Plate Using 100% Titanium Scrap Solids Passes Major Tests

Titanium plates, made from 100% Ti-6Al-4V scrap solids, have passed the major tests required for armor plate. The research was funded by DMTC in conjunction with DSN Innovations, a sister Army Center of Excellence. The research included the identification and processing of the metal, research and analysis to identify the economics and the use of supply chains made up of small enterprise manufacturers. Testing and evaluation was done by US Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) at the Picatinny Arsenal.
