Strategic Metals Co-op Program

The co-op program funded by the DMTC will allow selected advanced students from Stark State College of Technology (SSCT) with Computer-aided Design (CAD) and metals machining training, to spend a semester at the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. There, the students will work in the Prototype Fabrication Laboratory of the U.S. Army - Armament Research, Development & Engineering Center (ARDEC), learning the practical application of their academic training and assisting with existing and new Army projects, particularly in the machining and fabrication of titanium parts.

Ohio Congressman Ralph Regula (R-Ohio, 16th) praised the DMTC and SSCT for initiating this co-op program. "I want the success of this program to spawn additional workforce training programs at SSCT in titanium machining and welding." Regula added, "As students complete these programs, they will greatly improve our local talent pool available to our specialty metals industries.

Stark State College Engineering Technology Department Chair, Dr. Frank A. Fuller said, "The Defense Metals co-op program has created a great opportunity for our SSCT Engineering Technology (ET) students to gain hands-on and real world professional ET experience that greatly impacts their employment credentials. The feedback from our participating students has been very positive and enthusiastic. I hope to see this program continue."

Each semester we will track the experiences of our co-ops at the Picatinny Arsenal as they gain invaluable real-world experience in the high-paced, high-technology world of the U.S. Army.

In the Spring 2008 DMTC had 2 co-ops to start the program. In the Fall of 2008 DMTC, SSCT and the US Army expanded the co-op program to 4 students who are gaining real-world experience in specialty metals. Click here to learn more about each co-op student.
